Brundibár: A Children’s Opera of Hope and Resilience

“Brundibár,” a two-act children’s opera written by Jewish Czech composer Hans Krása, was originally staged by children at Theresienstadt concentration camp during World War II. The 2016 production of the opera at The National WWII Museum was my largest early projects. The Museum hosted 3 sold out performances. I had the honor of having Ela Weissberger, who played the cat in the Theresienstadt performances, in attendance and join the students on stage for the Victory March.

Ella Stein-Weissberger passed on March 30, 2018 at the age of 87. Her belief in the power of art and music will never be forgotten. It is among the greatest honors in my life to have known her.
